I find that the rapid change in weather can make for dry, chapped lips – when this happens, I reach for my ‘Golden Triangle’ of lip care products and use them all interchangeably, you know…because I like to mix stuff up.
Nivea Lip Essential Care | £1.69 | 4.8g |
The smallest (and cheapest) of the set, you really cannot go wrong with a Nivea lip balm, can ya? Enriched with Jojoba oil and shea butter, the balm helps moisturise the lips whilst leaving a faint gloss. It lasts about a good 90 mins before needing to be re-applied though so it’s something that I mainly use while at work. It gets the job done; no complaints.
REN Vita Mineral Lip Balm | £9.00 | 15ml |
Next, we move on to the slightly dearer REN Mineral lip balm from the Vita Mineral range. The gel-based balm is very rich and so only a slight amount is needed in order to fully moisturise the lips. I normally use this underneath a matte lipstick as it doesn’t give off a ‘glossy’ sheen and is non-slippery, which makes it a perfect base. Ingredients include Vitamin E oil, castor oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. If you’re into your natural skincare, this will definitely be right up your alley as it contains no parabens, sulphates, mineral oil or petroleum.
A note about petroleum: I haven’t used petroleum-based products for about two years now as it has been scientifically proved that petroleum does absolutely nothing to retain moisture. Have you ever had to keep re-applying Vaseline and wondered why it wouldn’t stay on as long? It’s because petroleum only coats the skin, it doesn’t penetrate it at all so in actual fact, you aren’t really getting any sort of long term benefit from applying that vaseline! If you’re looking for something to moisturise and hydrate lips, your best bet is some sort of beeswax/shea butter combo, which leads me nicely onto my last, and favourite lip balm:
NUXE Reve de Miel Honey Lip Balm | £6.33 | 15g |
By far the best lip balm I’ve ever used; EVER. Even the frosted glass packaging screams luxury to you! This is an intensive, butter based balm that is rich in honey, shea butter, beeswax and grapefruit essence and feels divine on the lips. The consistency is very thick; so much so that only a minute amount is needed at any one time. I use this predominantly before bedtime to allow the butter to do it’s work. A great add to your collection if you want ‘softer-than-a-babies’-bum’ lips.
What lip balm do you use?
I've been meaning to try the Nuxe lip balm for ages but never got round to buying it, I've banged on for ages about the fact that petroleum does nothing but protect your lips… so many people use the Vaseline tins expecting their lips to be moisturised; not gonna happen!
