Nestled within the core of Oakland’s most vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods, is the recently opened Kissel Uptown Hotel, part of the Unbound Collection by Hyatt Hotels. This modern, gorgeous hotel is set within 1,650 feet of the famous Art-Deco Paramount Theatre, a staple of the strong arts and entertainment district in the area.

How to get there

Located at 2455 Broadway, the hotel is in an extremely convenient part of town, which is incredibly central and very well connected by bus and the BART train. The hotel is close by a plethora of cool coffee shops and cafes, and is also conveniently located opposite Target, which was great for me as I became ill during my stay and was pleased to find that I could nip across the road to pick up some medicine! The hotel is also around the block from Oakland’s newest rooftop bar, High5ive.

Room

I stayed in the Urban Terrace King bedroom, which was located on the third-floor terrace and came with its own outdoor space which was stunning. The room is 300 square feet and features one king bed, a desk, a sofa, and all the amenities you would expect from a four-star hotel. The bathroom had a walk-in shower with a waterfall showerhead, with more than enough space for two people. I loved the elegant, vintage-inspired decor too, with the rattan wardrobe being my personal favourite!

The semi-private balcony was a welcome addition to the room also, with comfortable, plus size-friendly chairs as a bonus.

Cuisine

The hotel boasts its’ own restaurant called ‘Otto’s Uptown Kitchen’ – a gorgeous space with loads of natural lighting flooding into the area, where they serve quality coffee, breakfast items and filling meals throughout the day. The High 5ive bar is located just behind the hotel where you can enjoy tasty cocktails and American-style small bites from the kitchen also. One thing i noted about the food was how huge the portion sizes were. I know this is a general American thing to have big sizes, but the portions were huge! Needless to say, I was very happy.

Accessibility

The Kissel hotel is step-free, which is great for those who use wheelchairs or mobility scooters. There is also a slight ramp outside the hotel leading to the side pavement/street for those needing to hail a taxi, which I liked. The hotel is pet-friendly, meaning you can bring your dogs and it also offers free wifi. The elevators are huge, and there are also accessible rooms and toilets for those who need it.

The towels are generous, however, the robes fit up to a UK size 20 or so, which I think could definitely be improved.

Overall, I had a lovely couple of days stay at the hotel, and I would absolutely visit again!
