Summer(?) is gently – yet swiftly – coming to an end, marking the beginning of my favourite season: Cozy Girl Autumn. That’s right; we’ll swiftly be entering Pumpkin Spice Latte season and with that comes a change in wardrobe, starting with one of the most important wardrobe essential that’ll carry us through 80% of the year: the coat. Choosing the right coat is no mean feat, and when you’re plus size, you have to times the feat by 10 due to the smaller pool of brands we have to pick from.
The A/W runways were awash with statement statement outerwear – from leather coats and floral embellishments at Saint Laurent, to Versace’s bomber jackets and animal prints from Normal Kamali – but the question is, have these trends trickled down into the plus size department?

Below I’ve curated an edit of some of the standout coat styles that’ll be hot this season for 2023, making sure to find pieces that feature inclusive sizing.
The leading style of coat for this season is definitely the classic, black coat. Sure it may sound a little simple, but the key is in the execution and styling. The A/W runways was dominated by this piece, amped up with dominating shoulders, an oversized, tailored fit and a mid-to-maxi length. I’m a fan of a power shoulder, however as someone who carries her weight on top, I like to balance out having a structured shoulder with an hourglass or A-line style of coat, to balance out my shoulder and hips. Black coats are such a great wardrobe staple, with this season showing off a huge variety of styles, fabrications and silhouettes, for example, Gucci with their ankle length silhouettes and cinched in waists, and Simone Rocha with her embellished style. Check out some of the options below.

This very familiar silhouette brings back memories of me being a five year old trudging through the snow to go to reception. This is such a classic and retro style and it warms my heart to have seen the runways incorporating the menswear-inspired duffle coat.

You can’t beat a leather trench coat. It’s just something about them that screams elegance, mystery and sophistication. You can choose to go the high-end route, such as The Row’s gorgeous Agathon coat, or you can go the high street route and invest in a lovely buttery quality leather coat. I love pairing leather coats with a good wide-legged trouser and fitted top with some ankle boots. Add a beret or a beanie if you’re feeling snazzy.

Designers like MaxMara and Vince provide gorgeous luxury options if you’re so inclined, however the High Street also provide amazing options also!
