Fun fact: I was born with gapped teeth.
It’s not something I’ve often discussed at length for some reason, but my smile was something I was incredibly insecure about as a child and as a teenager. Having a gapped tooth is a trait that runs on my Father’s side of the family and even though I’ve personally always thought they looked beautiful on others, I didn’t like how it looked on me.
As soon as I started University and gained access to a hefty maintenance grant, I made an appointment with a local orthodontist to have my gap closed via porcelain caps (invisible braces were too expensive for ya girl back in the day). They weren’t able to close it all the way, so I still have an extremely thin gap (less than a millimetre in width) between my teeth.
Fast forward nine years later, and it’s always been one of my biggest regrets. I remember showing my Father a few weeks after getting it done and he looked absolutely crestfallen. In Ghana, having a gapped tooth is a sign of beauty and I instantly felt ashamed for succumbing to the ‘Western Ideal’.
Don’t get me wrong, since getting my teeth done, I smile HELLA HARD all the time and my confidence has skyrocketed, as I would never smile in public, or hide it behind my hands, but I sometimes do have pangs of regret for getting rid of something that I find so beautiful in others.
It was one of the reasons why I was so attracted to this jumper dress by In the Style Curve. I adore how the gapped teeth are standing bold, front and centre, instead of your typical non-gapped teeth prints.
It’s getting colder now, however, I absolutely refuse to wear leggings or tights yet. Ya’ll are gonna keep seeing these gams on the blog for as long as I can hold out. Winter who? Anaemia where? Nope!
